Tips for Combining Prints:
Here are some tips for combining different prints in paper or fabric, perfect for cardmaking, scrapbooking, or even quilting and home decor:
1. Choose a Color Palette
- Stick to a cohesive color scheme to unify different patterns.
- Use one dominant color and complement it with a couple of accent colors.
- Neutrals (like black, white, gray, or beige) can help balance bold prints.
2. Mix Print Scales
- Combine large, medium, and small-scale patterns to create visual interest without overwhelming the eye.
- Use one large-scale pattern as the focal point and balance it with smaller, subtler patterns.
3. Vary Pattern Styles
- Pair bold geometrics with soft florals for contrast.
- Mix organic patterns (like florals or paisleys) with structured patterns (like stripes or plaids).
- Combine modern prints with classic ones to add depth.
4. Use Solids and Textures as Anchors
- Break up busy patterns with solid colors or textured cardstock.
- This prevents the design from looking too cluttered.
5. Create a Visual Hierarchy
- Decide which print will be the focal point and build around it.
- Use bold patterns sparingly and complement them with simpler designs.
6. Stick to Odd Numbers
- Combine three or five different patterns for a balanced look.
- Odd numbers feel more natural and less forced.
7. Repeat Colors or Motifs
- Ensure continuity by repeating a color or motif across different patterns.
- This helps the eye move smoothly across the design.
8. Play with Scale and Proportion
- Use large patterns in the background and smaller, detailed prints in the foreground.
- This adds depth and layers to the design.
9. Balance Busy and Calm
- Offset bold, busy prints with simpler, more muted patterns.
- This prevents the overall design from becoming too chaotic.
10. Experiment and Trust Your Eye
- Lay out the patterns before committing to an arrangement.
- Trust your instincts—if it looks good to you, it probably works!
